About this Training Course
The technical role of the operations geologist is critical to the successful and safe drilling of a well. A clear understanding of the subsurface data in the planning and execution of the well is vital and is the main focus of this course.
A large amount of geological data is acquired at a substantial cost when carrying out a drilling operation. Well location and design input will require inputs from the operations geologist to avoid drilling hazards, plan casing points and data acquisition strategy. Ensuring safe and quality acquisition of this information, correct interpretation and effective communication is a key part of the operation geologist’s role during drilling operations. The close co-operation between geological, drilling and well engineering departments ensures optimal and safe drilling of the well.
This 4-day course aims to provide the participants with the foundational knowledge to be effective as an operations geologist. The course will comprise lectures interspersed with practical and interactive exercises as well as quizzes to promote better understanding for the participants.
Upon completion of the course, the participants will be able to:
- Recognise safety considerations in drilling a well.
- Understand the rig and engineering basics.
- Appreciate the role of the Operations Geologist and the other technical roles in operations.
- Acquire an understanding of drilling problems caused by subsurface conditions.
- Understand the role and contributions of the geologist to the well maturation process:
- Identify data acquisition essentials, the cost and value of information
- Recognize shallow and deep hazards
- Get to know what contributions are critical to the pore pressure prediction
- Provide input into the well design
- Familiarise themselves with wellsite data and drilling reports such as:
- Quick-look analysis to assess reservoir and hydrocarbons
- Mudlog data (lithology / cutting description, gas readings, core)
- Coring
- Data management and input
The course will benefit professionals such as Explorationists, Development, Production and Well-site Geoscientists who are new to operations / wellsite geology as well as Well Engineers who would like a deeper subsurface understanding on the operations geology responsibilities and content.

Your expert course leader has spent 28 years in the Energy and Mining industries, including 20 years with Shell in Exploration, Development and Carbon Sequestration / New Energies groups. She has played a key role in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico oil discoveries and gas discoveries in Asia.
Within Shell, she was an Operations Geology Subject Matter Expert. She has explored and developed opportunities onshore and offshore in the US, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Her experience has covered high temperature / high pressure wells, both vertical and deviated, in a variety of subsurface conditions and strata. The first seven years of her career was in the mining industry with Phelps Dodge and Placer Dome primarily exploring for gold, copper and zinc. Her M.S. is from Colorado School of Mines with a B.A. in both economics and geology from Lawrence University.
In our ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, we will no longer providing hard copy training materials. Instead, all training content and resources will be delivered in digital format. Inspired by the oil and energy industry’s best practices, we are leveraging on digital technologies to reduce waste, lower our carbon emissions, ensuring our training content is always up-to-date and accessible.
