Petroleum Geosciences Training Courses > Exploration Concepts for Tight Sand Plays

About this training

This 2-day intermediate-advanced level course provides a comprehensive understanding of tight oil and gas plays, which have gained significant importance in recent years due to technological advancements. Participants will gain in-depth exposure to the critical working elements and success factors of these unconventional reservoirs through an integrated approach.

The course brings together over 45 years of direct, hands-on experience and insights gathered by veteran instructors and expert course leader while working on major tight plays across the globe, especially in North America. It covers a holistic model that explains what differentiates tight oil and gas systems and why those differences are crucial.

Through global case studies, exercises, and analysis of both successful and unsuccessful plays, participants will learn the five key parameters – thermal maturity, proximity, pressures, fluids, and reservoirs – that dictate the viability of a tight play. The course will also delve into identifying exploration and production sweet spots, as well as plays that haven’t worked despite employing the best technologies.

Additionally, the course will provide an overview of emerging new technologies relevant to tight plays. By the end, participants will be better equipped to efficiently generate and/or evaluate tight oil and gas opportunities, with some application to Southeast Asian basins.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the holistic and integrated model for tight oil and gas plays, and what makes these systems different from conventional plays
  • Learn the five key parameters (thermal maturity, proximity, pressures, fluids, reservoirs) that determine the success of a tight play through case studies
  • Analyze case studies of successful tight plays to understand their characteristics and “sweet spots”
  • Examine plays that haven’t worked despite efforts, and understand the reasons behind their failure
  • Develop the ability to efficiently evaluate whether a potential tight play makes economic sense
  • Identify the fundamental factors and risks/uncertainties to check for when evaluating a tight play
  • Recognize suitable analogues and benchmarks for a given tight play opportunity
  • Gain insights into what differentiates and distinguishes tight oil and gas systems
  • Get exposure to emerging new technologies relevant to tight plays
  • Build competency in high-grading tight oil and gas opportunities, especially for SE Asian basins

This course is designed for technical professionals and managers who are currently working on or plan to work on tight oil and gas opportunities. It caters to those with several years of E&P experience across the subsurface disciplines of geosciences, reservoir engineering and petrophysics. Having a strong grasp of the fundamental petroleum system concepts is preferred to fully appreciate the nuances of tight reservoirs covered in the course.

  • Oil and gas subsurface technical staff: – Geoscientists (geologists, geophysicists) – Reservoir engineers – Petrophysicists
  • Managers & team leaders involved in exploration/development of tight oil & gas plays
  • Production Engineers
  • Petroleum Engineers
  • Completions Engineer
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

With over 20 years of extensive industry experience working tight oil assets across North America, your expert course leader, who based in Australia, has a comprehensive background spanning the full life cycle of unconventional resource plays – from geoscience evaluation and drilling/completions to production optimization and development planning. His hands-on roles have spanned the full value chain – from exploration and drilling horizontal wells, to executing multi-stage fracturing designs and maximizing production from tight oil reservoirs. He has been deeply involved in landmark tight oil projects that pushed the boundaries of drilling extremely long laterals, applying innovative completions techniques, and implementing field re-development strategies.
