Petroleum Geosciences Training Courses > Resource-Assessment of Geothermal Systems with Emphasis on Low to Medium-Enthalpy

About this Training

The global push for net-zero emissions has highlighted geothermal energy as a promising baseload contributor to sustainable energy systems, particularly in regions with suitable geological conditions. While geothermal assets’ value is directly tied to their extractable Heat Resource potential, accurately assessing these resources presents unique challenges due to diverse geological settings, fluid systems, and recovery techniques. Traditional oil and gas reservoir assessment methods may be applicable but must be adapted to the specific characteristics of geothermal systems.

This 1-day specialized course equips technical and managerial personnel involved in geothermal projects with essential knowledge for resource assessment and project direction. Participants will learn about geothermal Resource Assessment methodologies and UNFC classification guidelines, understand the required data and modeling techniques, identify key uncertainties affecting resource outcomes, and master strategies for optimizing both appraisal and subsurface development concepts. The curriculum is tailored to help professionals make informed decisions in developing and managing geothermal assets across various geological and technical contexts.

Upon completion of this course, the participants will get to:

  • Master the distinctions between geothermal systems, focusing on their heat-resource potential and appropriate exploitation strategies for each type.
  • Learn comprehensive methods for quantifying in-place and extractable heat resources across different geological settings, temperature ranges, and fluid systems, enabling informed selection of assessment techniques specific to your project context.
  • Develop proficiency in identifying and implementing appropriate subsurface characterization and modeling techniques to support accurate heat resource assessments, while gaining thorough understanding of UNFC Resource-Classification and Reporting guidelines.
  • Acquire expertise in identifying critical subsurface parameters that influence geothermal development outcomes, including knowledge of essential data requirements and effective methods for data acquisition through appraisal and testing programs.

This course is targeted to all technical and managerial professionals involved in the screening, project maturation and techno-commercial valuation of geothermal assets:

  • Geoscientists, engineering professionals and technical managers working on geothermal projects;
  • Government staff or staff from public organizations/city councils involved in sustainable subsurface energy projects;
  • Finance professionals and investors involved in the funding of geothermal exploration and development projects.
  • Intermediate

Your expert course leader is a broad-skilled energy consultant/geoscientist with 34 years industry experience and a proven track record of technical leadership, project management, and technical task and project delivery. His areas of expertise include techno-commercial project due-diligence, field (re)development, oil & gas reserve and resource assessments, geothermal resources and exploitation viability, underground storage of CO2 (CCS), and natural hydrogen. He has participated and/or led over 100 energy projects over the last 12 years, spanning the entire project life-cycle from frontier exploration to late field-life, and he is accredited to sign off on Company Reserves and Resources reports submitted to regulatory bodies. He is well versed with Reserves and Resources Classification and Reporting schemes such as SPE-PRMS and UNFC. Over the last few years, he has worked on 24 geothermal projects in various settings and locations across the world, including license-application support, project viability screening, geothermal resource assessments and Competent Person Report compilation for stock-exchange listed companies.
